The Arumana Amma Veedu in Kanyakumari district plays an important role in the History of the former Travancore state. The female members of this family were the consort of many kings, starting from Dharmaraja, Balarama Varma and Visakam Thirunal Rama Varma.
Velu Thampi Dalawa was provided protection in this house during his revolt with the British rule. A noble woman named Panapilla Lakshmi Pilla Kochamma of Arumana Amma Veedu was the first lady to start English education in the royal house. She later became the wife of Visakam Thirunal.
Near by the present Amma Veedu are the remains of a very old Naalukettu. This old house was a madhom used by the potty's (priests) of the family. The Arumana Amma Veedu is now owned by the distant relatives of the former owners. The old house, probabily built during the reign of Visakam Thirunal has large rooms, with high ceiling, a court yard and seperate kitchen connected to the house by a corridor.
